Stomach Cancer



The incidence of gastric cancer in men is twice than in women. Stomach cancer , in its early stages , becomes symptomatic, leading the patient to the doctor . For this reason, the disease is in advanced stages at diagnosis. This cancer, is very aggresive , as it may have spread to other organs. The treatment of gastric cancer can be more efficient with better prognosis, if diagnosis is made by early detection of the disease before further spread.

  Stomach cancer is classified according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) depending on its position in central tumor (cardia) near the esophagus tumors and peripheral (non cardia) near the pylorus .

Risk factors for stomach cancer is atrophic gastritis , intestinal metaplasia , dysplasia , and infection with Helicobacter pylori , canned food , smoked food , poorly maintained foods , nitrites , nitrosamines , smokers (2-3 times higher frequency) , miners , manufacturers of tires etc.

Rather beneficial are genuine vegetables , fresh fruits , vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and foods that contains antioxidants .

Lack of appetite

Unexpected weight loss

Aversion to meat

Abdominal pains

Feeling of fullness in the stomach even with taking small quantities of food


Nausea and vomiting

Hematemesis ( vomiting containing blood)

Melena (blood in stools from the upper digestive system has gotten during passage of the gastrointestinal track, black)

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may further help. Where the surgery can not provide a cure , chemotherapy and radiotherapy can contribute to reducing the palliative treatment of pain and other symptoms .

The median survival after resection is 29-38 months except early gastric cancer which can receive definitive and complete treatment.
